The old bridge on the river Gartempe in Rancon

This bridge is called by local people the old bridge. Historians dated it back to the 11th and 13th century but recently, others historians discovered that its supports dated back to the gallo roman period. It was on the road joining Augustoritum (Limoges) to Argentomagus (Argenton sur Creuse). The supports were built in masonry and the roadway was probably in wood. On the right bank of the river, you can see the “stone of the ferryman”. It has a cylindrical shape and has a big gash. At first, it was probably a gallo roman kilometer marker, and later it may have been used to tie a hypothetic ferry. In fact, it was probably used to tie the barks upon which people extracted sand from the river.
