Moret-sur-Loing

The Royal Square, the City Walls, the 12th century Keep are proud of their medieval origins and shape the architecture of the old city.Though most of the 1356 meters of walls and the twenty towers have disappeared over the years, the two gateways, Porte de Bourgogne and Porte de Samois, magnificently attest its medieval past. The majesty of the gates, the bridge and the banks of the River Loing as that of the Church Notre-Dame make Moret an exceptional site for history enthusiasts, dedicated walkers and painters. While strolling through the centre of town, you will discover superb Renaissance façades, the House of the Barley Sugar, a speciality of the nuns of Moret-sur-Loing since the 17th century or even the house and tomb of Alfred Sisley, the “Moret Impressionist”, who was the first to capture the majesty of light over the city. Numerous tourists come and see the sites painted by Sisley and these sites have been preserved: the Bridge over the Loing, immortalized by the painter ,the Church Notre Dame, the dominating Keep, the towpaths…To those who come from town or villages nearby, come and enjoy a guided tour and don’t hesitate to wander in the narrow streets or along the banks of the river, before enjoying a meal at one of the best restaurants in town. The Cirkwi brief

Explore the Charms of St Mammès: A Unique Trail

Embark on a journey designed by Seine et Marne Attractivité that vividly captures the soul of St Mammès, nestled at the confluence of the Seine and Loing rivers. This trail isn't just about the trek; it's an immersion into the vibrant tradition of boatmen, with the backdrop of charming villages caught between these waterways. As a travel magazine writer, I find that the essence of St Mammès offers a delightful mix of nautical life and serene walks through history and nature. The allure beckons not only to the seafarers at heart but to anyone drawn to quaint lanes and bucolic shores that whisper tales of bygone eras.

Technical Trail Insights

Covering a distance of 8.8 kilometers, this trail presents a moderate challenge with an altitude ranging between 45 and 97 meters. The positive altitude change amounts to an impressive 175 meters, requiring a good level of physical fitness for explorers. Considering these specifics, the trail serves as an excellent opportunity for trekkers seeking to test their endurance while enjoying scenic landscapes. Be prepared for varying terrains and some sections that may demand a bit more from your hiking shoes, emphasizing the trail’s technical aspects.

Seasonal Advice for Visitors

As a local guide, I recommend visiting during the spring or autumn months to truly appreciate the trail’s beauty. These seasons offer a picturesque setting as the blooming flora or autumnal hues embellish the landscape, making your journey even more memorable. Always carry water and weather-appropriate attire to adapt to sudden changes. During summer, sunscreen and hats are indispensable due to the open stretches along the river. Winter explorers should prioritize warmth and tread cautiously on potentially icy paths. Regardless of the season, respect the environment and stay on marked trails for a safe exploration.

The Rich Tapestry of St Mammès

St Mammès, located within the Île-de-France region, boasts a profound historical canvas that stretches back to its inception as a pivotal batellerie community. Its unique position at the confluence of the Seine and Loing rivers has carved out its destiny as a vibrant trading and transportation hub through the centuries. This region, rich in cultural heritage, has inspired artists like Alfred Sisley, emphasizing its scenic beauty and historical significance. The architectural marvels, from medieval remnants to Renaissance facades, narrate the evolution of a community deeply intertwined with France’s waterways and their crucial role in shaping national history.

Best Time to Visit: Weather Overview

The Île-de-France region exhibits a continental climate, characterized by mild summers and cool winters. Precipitation is fairly distributed throughout the year, with occasional spikes in spring and autumn. For those planning to walk this trail, late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) present the most favorable weather conditions. During these periods, the temperature is comfortable, and the natural scenery is at its peak vibrancy, making it an ideal time for hikers and nature enthusiasts to explore and appreciate the intrinsic beauty of St Mammès and its surroundings.
