From the car park, turn right onto the towpath (bike museum) and walk to the bridge. Cross the bridge and turn left onto Rue Théo-Bonhomme climbing up onto the plateau. Beneath the high-voltage line, continue straight on along the path and at the edge of the wood, turn right. The path snakes its way through the undergrowth. Cross the bridge over the railway.
Walk down the road to the right, then turn left onto Rue des Prés.
20 metres after the roundabout, turn right and enter the park. Turn left onto the path and cross the picnic area on the Seine River. Continue on towards the bridge. Go down to the quay (on the wall, five sketches by the painter Sisley), then climb back up onto the walkway to cross first the Quai de la Croix-Blanche then Rue Grande. From the Place Eugène-Renoud-Bernard square, walk along the Seine (on the low wall, ceramic works represent popular stopovers for journeying bargees).
Pass by the landing stage and walk to the confluence of the Seine and Loing Rivers. Walk up the Loing along the left-hand walkway. Follow Rue du Passeur on the left, the wide alleyway, Rue de Fleury to the right, and finally turn left onto a path marked with anchors and lined by a fence. Take the third right-hand alleyway, then turn right onto Rue Alfred-Pierrard, left onto Rue de Fleury and finally right onto Promenade de la Bourse.
Enter through the stone gateway and follow the thematic “inland navigation” discovery walk leading to the Loing riverbank. Walk along the river on the left, pass under the viaduct and continue on to the overpass.
Walk under the overpass, climb the stairs to the left, cross the bridge and go down left to reach the west bank of the canal. Follow the towpath to return to the car park.

Embark on a journey designed by Seine et Marne Attractivité that vividly captures the soul of St Mammès, nestled at the confluence of the Seine and Loing rivers. This trail isn't just about the trek; it's an immersion into the vibrant tradition of boatmen, with the backdrop of charming villages caught between these waterways. As a travel magazine writer, I find that the essence of St Mammès offers a delightful mix of nautical life and serene walks through history and nature. The allure beckons not only to the seafarers at heart but to anyone drawn to quaint lanes and bucolic shores that whisper tales of bygone eras.
Covering a distance of 8.8 kilometers, this trail presents a moderate challenge with an altitude ranging between 45 and 97 meters. The positive altitude change amounts to an impressive 175 meters, requiring a good level of physical fitness for explorers. Considering these specifics, the trail serves as an excellent opportunity for trekkers seeking to test their endurance while enjoying scenic landscapes. Be prepared for varying terrains and some sections that may demand a bit more from your hiking shoes, emphasizing the trail’s technical aspects.
As a local guide, I recommend visiting during the spring or autumn months to truly appreciate the trail’s beauty. These seasons offer a picturesque setting as the blooming flora or autumnal hues embellish the landscape, making your journey even more memorable. Always carry water and weather-appropriate attire to adapt to sudden changes. During summer, sunscreen and hats are indispensable due to the open stretches along the river. Winter explorers should prioritize warmth and tread cautiously on potentially icy paths. Regardless of the season, respect the environment and stay on marked trails for a safe exploration.
St Mammès, located within the Île-de-France region, boasts a profound historical canvas that stretches back to its inception as a pivotal batellerie community. Its unique position at the confluence of the Seine and Loing rivers has carved out its destiny as a vibrant trading and transportation hub through the centuries. This region, rich in cultural heritage, has inspired artists like Alfred Sisley, emphasizing its scenic beauty and historical significance. The architectural marvels, from medieval remnants to Renaissance facades, narrate the evolution of a community deeply intertwined with France’s waterways and their crucial role in shaping national history.
The Île-de-France region exhibits a continental climate, characterized by mild summers and cool winters. Precipitation is fairly distributed throughout the year, with occasional spikes in spring and autumn. For those planning to walk this trail, late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) present the most favorable weather conditions. During these periods, the temperature is comfortable, and the natural scenery is at its peak vibrancy, making it an ideal time for hikers and nature enthusiasts to explore and appreciate the intrinsic beauty of St Mammès and its surroundings.
