Start from the market square (Place du Faubourg) in Najac You can park your car on the Post Office car park. Go along the square, pass in front of the Tourist Office and continue as far as the grocer’s shop on the left. Walk around the grocer’s shop on the left, go down the stairs and walk along the houses and gardens through the beautiful path called “Roc de cabusse”. Go down to “La Loge” area and turn on the right to go to the small square with a star on the ground. Turn left on the street “Rue du Bourguet” and after 120 meters turn left again on the street “Rue de la Portette”, just behind the small restaurant. Continue to the next crossroads.
Turn left, cross the road D39 and go down on the botanical path as far as the Gabanel fountain. Cross the small bridge and go on the steep path under the box trees. Do not turn on the path you will find on your right and continue to go up between the fir trees. At the next crossroads turn right and continue to go up as far as the crossroads with 3 paths.
[Junction possible with the tour n°4 if you turn left at this crossroads] Take the path on your right on the way to Cassagnes. The path goes around the holiday village VAL-VVF. Continue the small path going to a beautiful viewpoint of Najac.
[Junction possible with the tour n°6 if you continue the path in front of you instead of turning right] Continue straight on the wide path for 150 meters and turn lightly on the right between the rocks and go to the direction of Puech Calme (arid area where only small shrub and box trees live on). Look around, no sign of civilization, you are alone in the world !
Turn right on the wide path going along the river Aveyron. You will discover the remains of an old watermill (Moulin de Ferragut) and another one still working (Moulin d’Auribal). Observe the marks on the door. Sandstone (very abrasive) permitted to sharpen tools necessary to sharpen the millstones.
Continue for 300 meters as far as the top of the hill. Shortcut possible if you turn right to go to the Gabanel fountain. Otherwise continue straight on the small road going to the medieval bridge and the road D594. 50 meters before the crossroads with the D594 turn right on the old cobbled path. Cross the main road D39 and go up just in front of you to go to the church. [Junction possible with the tour n°2 if you turn left 100 meters before the church]. Turn around the church square and go down to the presbytery to reach the “Rue Basse” going up to the village. Continue on the next street (Rue de la Portette) to come back to your starting point.
You can go up on the street « Rue du Barriou » going directly to the main square.
Organized to accommodate markets, the place, long and narrow, is surrounded by stone or wood covered houses from 15 and 16th centuries. They all have porches under which the stalls were sheltered for sale.
This public fountain deeply carved in a huge mass of granite is at the center of the village. A latin inscription relates the date of its construction and the name of the Conuls under whom it was erected.
This used to be a rest area (hence the name : La Pause) on the medieval road (former roman path) leading to Najac via the St Blaise bridge. Thanks to renowned fairs and traditional markets, this part of town remained a flourishing neighborhood until the end of 19th century.
